Effects of electrical stimulation for lymphoedema (study from 2015)

The 2015 study investigated the effects of electrical stimulation on swelling and lymphatic drainage in patients with post-operative lymphoedema. Postoperative lymphedema occurs as a result of lymph node removal or damage to the lymphatic system during surgery and manifests as swelling and reduced lymphatic drainage in the affected area.

The study included 36 patients with postoperative lymphoedema of the upper extremity who were randomly divided into two groups: a group that received electrical stimulation therapy and a control group that received no therapy. Electrostimulation therapy was applied twice daily for a period of 4 weeks.

The results showed that the application of electrical stimulation led to a significant reduction in swelling and an improvement in lymphatic drainage. Compared to the control group, the electrical stimulation group had a significant reduction in arm volume and a significant improvement in lymphatic drainage. The researchers concluded that electrical stimulation can be an effective therapeutic option for the treatment of postoperative lymphedema.

It has been suggested that electrical stimulation promotes lymphatic drainage by activating the smooth muscle cells in the lymphatic vessels and stimulating the muscle pump. Electrical stimulation triggers muscle contractions that improve blood and lymph flow in the affected area and can therefore reduce swelling.

It is important that electrostimulation is performed by a qualified professional in order to minimize possible risks and side effects.
